| Judges´ Comments |
| “Whilst by no means perfect, Asma Begum´s ‘That mysterious feeling…’ is an excellent example of the short story´s discipline of limited characters and places and a minimal but profound story which has purpose and resolution. The story begins with the narrator looking at the sunset, and ends with him looking at stars - a short time span yet a ‘big’ story. ‘The commotion in the distance proved that the man was caught, but it didn´t matter,’ shows an intelligent understanding of what to leave out: Asma´s reflective tone and pace resonate, and the well placed hints and hooks captivate: ‘My world knew how to appreciate being alone and reflective but that is all I know. Everything else seems foreign to me.’ What is the character´s world, whose grave is he looking at? What is the mysterious feeling? We have to keep reading, have to wait for the story to unfold to totally understand and, ironically, empathise. The story lingers in the memory long after the reading.” |
